Who Are We?
Design Acoustics Ltd was established by Tony Windner (BArch) in Tauranga 2003. Tony has over 14 years experience as an acoustic consultant in New Zealand, the USA and the UK.
Peter Horne (BEng) recently returned from the United States to establish Design Acoustics Auckland Ltd. He has over 10 years experience as an acoustic consultant in New Zealand and the USA.
Room Acoustics - Architectural Acoustics - acoustics of the interior of a room
Perhaps you have been in a restaurant where everyone had to raise their voice, or even shout, in order to be heard. Or, perhaps you have been in a hall where you couldn't clearly hear or understand the presenter. We can design the acoustics of a room to complement the activities that will take place within.
The characteristics of speech rooms (e.g. classrooms, lecture theatres, drama theatres) are different from those of music rooms (e.g. concert halls, music rehearsal and performance spaces). Specialist acoustic design is important not only for these spaces, but also for many other spaces such as churches, schools, community centres, offices, restaurants, gymnasiums and swimming pools, which can otherwise be uncomfortably loud and reverberant.
Design Acoustics will help create the right acoustic environment by providing recommendations on room shape and size, and on selection and placement of appropriate absorbing and reflecting materials. Acoustical materials can provide strong visual elements, with interesting forms and textures, which can enhance our overall perception of a space. We are active members of the design team, proposing options for acoustical control which achieve aesthetic and other requirements. We like to develop spaces that not only sound great, but look great too.
